ST. LOUIS –Missouri Baptist put together a solid effort in the final game of the season on Saturday against the No. 5-ranked St. Francis (Ind.) Cougars. Though the score ended in a lopsided 64-6 loss, MBU ended the season with solid progress heading into year three.
Missouri Baptist (0-10) looked good early but gave-up the game's first score. St. Francis moved the ball 70 yards on just five plays as quarterback Nick Ferrer found Seth Coate in the end zone to make it a 7-0 game.
The MBU rushing attack attempted to tie the game on the next drive, thanks to the running tandem of Antoryio Barton and William Pratt. The Spartans got the ball all the way down to the Cougar 16 yard line, but a fumble ended the Missouri Baptist threat.
St. Francis added to its lead early in the second half, once on offense, and again on defense. Seth Coate added to his touchdown total with 13:11 remaining in the second quarter. Ferrer found the lanky, 6-4 wide receiver in the end zone for his second score of the day to extend its lead. After a botched extra point try, MBU trailed 13-0.
On the ensuing Spartan drive, the Cougars' defense came-up big. St. Francis' Cale Tabler picked-off a Jacob Hunt pass and returned it 40 yards to the house to make it a 20-0 MBU deficit.
After St. Francis posted another score to extend the lead to 27-0, the MBU offense began to move the chains. Missouri Baptist went 62 yards in 13 plays and capped it off with an Alex McGlassion field goal to make it a 27-3 game.
St. Francis notched two more touchdowns in the second quarter with just under two minutes remaining and added a safety on a blocked punt to make it a 43-3 game entering halftime.
After the break, the Cougars put the first score on the board with just over eight minutes remaining in the third quarter. Nick Ferrer connected with Seth Stuart for his first touchdown of the day to make it 50-3.
Missouri Baptist fought back and chipped-in another field goal, but that ended the scoring for the home team as the No. 5-ranked Cougars secured its ninth win and undefeated regular season.
Missouri Baptist was led by Antoryio Barton, who finished the day with 58 yards on the ground and 13 receiving. William Pratt also had a balanced day in both the rushing and passing attack. The freshman ended his day with 49 all-purpose yards.
