Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Jake Terry scored 22 points and Chris Buzzell added 19 to lead the Spartans to a 122-46 season-opening win over Concordia Seminary Tuesday night in Lacey Gym.
First-year head coach Matt Brock opened his Missouri Baptist career with a 76-point route of the Preachers. Missouri Baptist (1-0) shot 69.2 percent overall from the field and 9 of 13 from 3-point range.
Seven total Spartans reached double figures. Luke Call added 16 points while David Gabrovsek chipped in 15 points. The duo combined to hit seven 3-pointers on 10 attempts.
Concordia Seminary only trailed 11-7 after the first five minutes, but then the Spartans took things over. Buzzell drained his first 3-pointer of the season to double-up the Preachers and spark a 52-17 run to end the first half.
Terry had 14 of his 22 points in the opening 20 minutes. Stephen Buckner dished out five of his team-high six assists in the first half as well.
The Spartans also forced 31 total turnovers, including 20 in the first half. Terry's packed season-opening stat line included a team-high four steals. Missouri Baptist also held Concordia Seminary to 18 field goals on 27 percent shooting from the field.
The second half featured much of the same Missouri Baptist dominance. Isaiah Cotton started the scoring in the second half with two of his 11 points and the Spartans never looked back.
The Preachers were held nearly seven minutes without a field goal until Adam Kosberg drained a 3-pointer with 13:18 left to go. Kosberg scored a team-high nine points on three 3-pointers. Noah Kegley and Adam Rodriguez also pitched in nine points for Concordia Seminary.
Missouri Baptist continued to build its lead all throughout the second half which capped at 76 points when James King scored in the game's final seconds.
All 10 Spartans that played scored and six players saw their first action in a Spartan uniform.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, Nov. 6 against Drury University in an exhibition game. They will then take on Bryan College on Nov. 13 as part of the Huntington (Ind.) Classic. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
