ST. LOUIS - [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist women's volleyball defeated American Midwest Conference opponent Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-17) with clean play and strong serves on Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated in conference play.
Kristina Medanovic struck first blood with the kill from the middle as MBU (14-1, 3-0) took a quick 1-0 lead. The Lions tried to hang with the Spartans but Missouri Baptist advanced its lead with the strong serves of Mallory Dillon. The junior posted four service aces in the match and led the No. 3-ranked MBU from the service line on the day.
Just as the set began, it ended, thanks to another kill from Medanovic as the Spartans took the first set 25-13. The 6-1 middle finished the set with four kills and a service ace and built off an impressive match under 24 hours earlier.
French import Marion Couraud started the second set with a kill for Missouri Baptist and it was more of the same in as the second game of the day got underway. Freed-Hardeman kept the score close for the first 10 points, but with the strong offensive play of the Spartans, the home team pulled away to a 25-15 set win as the final nail in the coffin came off the hand of senior Bree Whittington, her first of the season.
Missouri Baptist mixed up the lineup in set three as Natalie Gremaud, Hailey Townsend and Shelby Clifton entered as starters. Gremaud, the setter from Perryville, Mo. recorded 11 assists, including the final one to Taylor Cook as the team earned its third consecutive conference win. The Spartans held the Lions under a 0.200 hitting percentage as a team through the entirety of the match.
Dillon led the offense with 12 kills and four service aces. The outside also recorded the highest attack percentage on the day with 0.647. Medanovic followed with nine kills of her own
Missouri Baptist will take a short break from conference play to face former AMC rival, NCAA Division II McKendree University (Ill.) on Sept. 22 in the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex.
