ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist Men's Wrestling team remained undefeated in conference play Tuesday night after defeating Hannibal-LaGrange 27-19 on the road.
Five of the 10 weights in the match were forfeited, including the first four. Matt Mattingley of Hannibal-LaGrange then defeated Matt Behr by a close 5-2 decision to give the Trojans a three-point advantage.
From then on, the Spartans who are now 3-0 in conference play, took over. Hannibal had to forfeit the 165-lb weight class, which put Missouri Baptist out on top and then three consecutive wins from Andrew Carter-Johnson, Quentin Lawrence and Andrew Mahone helped the Spartans seal the match.
Carter-Johnson defeated his opponent by a 9-7 decision to put the Spartans up 21-15. Lawrence followed suit with a close 5-3 decision win in the first period of overtime. Finally, Mahone gave the team its 15thstraight point and a 27-15 lead with a 4-1 win by decision over Nigel Burnett in the 197-lb class.
The Spartans dropped the match's final bout, but had already wrapped up the win. They continue AMC play today on Wednesday, Jan. 20 against Lyon College and Williams Baptist in Batesville, Ark. Match times are currently set for 5:00 and 7:00 pm.
