BELLEVILLE, Ill. – [BOX SCORE] It took skill, a few breaks and one big broken play, which resulted in the game winner in overtime for the Spartans to break their first win streak in team history. Missouri Baptist picked-up the key touchdown on the first drive of overtime to down Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) on the road, 14-7.
In a game where offensive mis-steps and key defensive turnovers ruled, Missouri Baptist got the right plays at the right time on Saturday as the team overtook rival Lindenwood-Belleville. Eddie Calderon came-up with the biggest play of the game, an interception in the end zone with just seconds left in regulation, and forced overtime in the contest.
Missouri Baptist put together the game's only score in the first half, which stood for 19:40, before the Lynx tied the game early in the fourth quarter. On that Spartan drive, Devin Griffin capped-off a nine-play, 71-yard drive for his third touchdown in two games, to give his team the one-touchdown advantage.
Lindenwood-Belleville, however, fought through a rough day on the penalty side of things to keep it within seven. The Lynx were flagged 16 times for 166 yards, which paused several promising drives, and kept the game close.
On the other side of things, the Spartan offense didn't quite click on Saturday, but got the points when they mattered. In overtime, after a botched handoff, Gunner Griffin kept his composure and, on the run, found Shawn Calhoun over the right hash marks 10 yards deep with daylight ahead. The Missouri Baptist wide receiver waltzed into the end zone to put the visitors up for good.
At the other end, as the Lynx tried to respond, a fumble by Darrien Boone ended the game as Keenan Savage picked-up the ball, knocked loose by Dominic Aguirre, and iced the game on rivalry week.
Next up for the Spartans is a road test against Olivet Nazarene. Game time is scheduled for 1:00pm in Bourbonnais, Ill.
