ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] It was the perfect start to the season on Saturday inside R. Alton Lacey Gymnaseum. Missouri Baptist put together an impressive four-quarter effort and shot 62 percent from the floor on the way to a 99-37 win over Morthland College (Ill.) in the season opener.
Missouri Baptist (1-0) was dominant from the outset and held Morthland to just seven points in the opening quarter of play. Evident from the tip will be the new style of play for the offense as a balanced attack and a low post-driven offense took shape in front of nearly 200 fans at the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex.
Amanda Scott, after sitting last season in her redshirt year, exploded on Saturday. The junior posted a team-high 16 points in the win, and came just three rebounds shy of a double-double. In total, 14 Spartans recorded points in the box score as the balanced attack of Coach Iris Dixon worked to perfection.
Missouri Baptist forced 28 turnovers in the game, and made them all count. The Spartans also recorded 44 points off turnovers while a whopping 68 points from the paint.
The Spartans led 53-17 entering the break, but slowed things down in the second half. Missouri Baptist's bench recorded 61 points in the game as the team cruised to a 1-0 start.
As a team, the Spartans posted 16 steals. Kennedy Smith and Trina Valencia combined for six in the game, while it was Valencia and Shay Robinson who got red hot from beyond the arc. The duo combined for five of the team's six three-balls in the game.
Missouri Baptist will get a much deserved break for the next nine days and return to action on Tuesday, November 15 when the team hosts College of the Ozarks (Mo.). Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Carl and Deloris Sports and Recreation Complex.
