Box Score ST. LOUIS- [BOX SCORE] No. 13 ranked Missouri Baptist Women's Volleyball faced Freed-Hardeman in the quarterfinals of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament on Tuesday night. The No. 2 seed Spartans came away with a straight set victory (25-14, 25-18, 25-12) to advance to the semi-finals.
The match opened with something of a feeling-out process. Neither team could establish more than a one-point lead through the first half of the opening set. MBU was ahead 15-14 when the tide officially flipped. With Marion Couraud at the service line, the Spartans ripped off 10 straight points to run away with the set 25-14.
Missouri Baptist followed a similar route in the second set. Trailing 16-13, they went on a 12-2 run to once again runaway with the set. The Spartans then carried the momentum into set three and routed the Lions 25-12 to take the match 3-0.
The final stat sheet showed a balanced attack was key for MBU. Mallory Dillon led the way with 11 kills while four other Spartans posted at least five kills.
In the digs department, Natalie Gremaud registered a team-high 13 but Cate Cigarini (4), Marion Couraud (6), Catie Ward (6), Megan Huffman (8), and Mallory Dillon (6) were all instrumental on the defensive side.
As a team, the Spartans posted 19 block assists. This was their highest total since August 26 when they tallied 26 in a five-set match against St. Thomas. Six of those block assists came from Cate Cigarini, followed by five from Mallory Dillon, and four from Kelly Wilson.
Missouri Baptist now moves on to the semi-finals. They will host the No. 3 seed Columbia College on Friday, November 11 at 6:30. The Spartans defeated Columbia 3-0 earlier this year but the No. 21 NAIA ranked Cougars will enter Friday on a nine-match winning streak.
The winner will meet either Park or William Woods in the AMC Championship on Saturday at 5 pm. Both the semi-finals and the championship match will be hosted by Missouri Baptist in Lacey Gymnasium.
