ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] In the team's second to last game before welcoming the Christmas break, the Spartans were unable to handle an, at times, suffocating defense by Lyon College (Ark.) The Scots pulled-down an impressive 42 rebounds on Thursday on the way to handing Missouri Baptist Women's Basketball an 64-50 loss in St. Louis.
Missouri Baptist (2-6, 1-3 AMC) took an early lead against the No. 8-ranked Scots as Amanda Rowden knocked-down a three-ball from the elbow to give the home team 3-2 lead. Lyon, however, put together an 8-0 run and snatched the momentum away midway through the opening quarter.
As the Spartans fought through early adversity, they were unable to cash-in on early miscues by the Scots on offense. The Spartans forced two consecutive turnovers, but were unable to convert thanks to a stingy Lyon defense.
As the Spartans went ice cold from the floor for portions of the first quarter, the Scots followed suit, which kept the deficit at six, as the second quarter got underway.
Chanel Brown ended the first quarter as she began the second. The junior forward took the ball to the hole and posted two quick buckets to help the Spartans back to within four, but turnovers and a renewed shooting confidence from the Scots put the team from Batesville back in the driver's seat. Kelsey Smith and Gracen Ratliff put two consecutive buckets in and began to pull the game out of reach for Missouri Baptist.
The Spartans trailed by 11, 34-23, at the half and the Scots began to put the foot on the gas in the third quarter. Lyon outscored the Spartans 11-4 until the first timeout in the quarter and put the game out of reach on the way to a 64-50 loss at home.
Shay Robinson led the Spartans once again on Thursday night. The junior out of Decatur, Ill., put together her fifth game of the season in double digits. The forward ended her night with 18 points a new career high.
Lyon hit its rebound per game average in the game as they put together a strong night under the boards. The Scots out-rebounded Missouri Baptist 42-26 on the way to extending their American Midwest Conference undefeated streak to five games.
The Scots were led by a big night from Kiara Moore. The senior from Little Rock, Ark., posted 13 points and five steals.
Missouri Baptist will have just one more conference test prior to the Christmas break as the Spartans welcome the Central Baptist (Ark.) Mustangs to the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex on Saturday, December 17, 2016. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
