Box Score 2 No.2 ranked Missouri Baptist Women's Volleyball was back in action on Friday with two more matches on their Florida swing.
ST. LOUIS- [BOX SCORE IIT] [BOX SCORE STU] The day got started with an afternoon matchup with the Warriors of Indiana Tech. The Spartans picked up where they left off on Thursday, with an efficient three-set victory (16-25, 19-25, 19-25).
After falling behind 5-2 early in set one, senior leader Mallory Dillon took control of the serve and the Spartans rattled off 9 consecutive points.
MBU never looked back from there. They controlled the match from that point on and eased to a straight set victory to stay undefeated at 5-0.
Dillon was the catalyst with a team-leading 18 kills and 26 total attacks. Cate Cigarini and Tina Medanovic were once again outstanding in the middle for the Spartans. Cigarini had 8 kills to go along with 11 total attacks, while Medanovic contributed 7 kills and 16 total attacks.
Megan Huffman orchestrated the offense with 26 assists.
The second match of the day was against tournament host, St. Thomas University, and it turned out to be a wild affair.
The Spartans stormed out the gates to take the first set 25-19. Set two was closer but MBU once again edged St. Thomas 25-22.
The tide turned in set three however. Missouri Baptist fell way behind early in the set before fighting all the way back to tie it at 23. St. Thomas then found the extra gear to get the needed two points and force another set.
Set four was all Bobcats and it was clear that something had clicked. The home crowd was now into it and with a 25-16 score, we were on to a decisive 5th set. The Spartans gave it everything they had in set five, but momentum and home court advantage was too much to overcome. St. Thomas took the set 15-13 and the match to go with it. MBU fell to 5-1 while St. Thomas remained undefeated at 5-0.
For Missouri Baptist, Mallory Dillon delivered 23 kills and 64 total attacks. Megan Huffman had 42 assists for the Spartans.
Natalie Gremaud and Catie Ward were busy on the defensive side. Gremaud handled 18 digs, while Dillon contributed 14. Ward was close behind that with 9.
Missouri Baptist will conclude their Florida trip with two final matches on Saturday. Starting at 9 am CST, MBU will square off with Xavier University of Louisiana. That will be followed by a match at 1 pm CST against College of Coastal Georgia.
The Spartans next home match will be Wednesday, August 31, against St. Mary-of-the-Woods College at 6 pm.
