OMAHA, Neb. - After storming-out to a 17-13 lead after one quarter of play, Missouri Baptist was unable to keep the Harris-Stowe (Mo.) offense off the board. The Spartans were out-rebounded 50-34 in a 71-61 loss to the Hornets in Midtown.
Missouri Baptist (4-3, 2-2 AMC) snagged an early lead thanks to a 5-0 run to close-out the first quarter. Though the Spartans kept it close through the second quarter and entered halftime with a one-point, 35-34 lead, the Hornets were simply too strong down the stretch.
Harris-Stowe, led by Alantis Sutton and Dynesha Powell, controlled the pace in the second half. The duo combined for 22 points in the contest to grab the victory.
Missouri Baptist continued its torrid pace in steals with 11 total for the team in the contest.
Briya Wilborn led in not only that category, but every major category on the day. The senior guard posted two steals and led the Spartans in points (12), rebounds (5) and assists (5).
Amanda Scott saw her first action of the season after recovering from an injury and looked to be in fine form. The senior post player netted eight points for the Spartans in the game.
As a whole, the Spartans shot just 35 percent from the floor and a 58 percent from the free throw line.
With the loss, the Spartans return home 0-2 on their road trip with a home game against NAIA No. 9-ranked Benedictine (Kan.) on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex.
