ST. LOUIS—[BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist Men's Soccer snapped a two-match losing streak on Thursday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over the University of St. Francis (Ind.).
The Spartans stormed out of the gates in the first half, using a high press to dominate possession and keep the Cougars on their heels. After several close chances, Brandon Boos finally broke through in the 36th minute. The freshman cut across the top of the USF box and fired home to give MBU a 1-0 lead. Justin Schuttenberg and Gerardo Espinoza provided the assists.
The Cougars squared the match 10 minutes into the second half but the tie was short lived. Just three minutes later, Spartan defender Ben Randolph scored from close range after a broken play in the USF penalty area. The senior's third career goal gave the navy and white the lead for good. The assist went to Ben Boyd, his first of two helpers on the day.
Missouri Baptist continued the attack and eventually extended the lead to two with five minutes remaining when Gabriele Zennaro got a head on a cross from Andrew Stuhlman. Garrett Dieckhaus capped off the scoring in the final minute with the first of his MBU career.
Head Coach Jake Alvernia was proud of the team's response after two defeats last week:
"The boys came out with a good effort today," Alvernia noted. "They worked hard and found the will to push on when needed. [Brandon] Boos came on and gave us a big needed goal that lifted us. Just as important was the response from Ben Randolph after they scored."
The Spartans improve to 2-3 on the season while USF goes to 1-2. Missouri Baptist will complete their road trip through Indiana when they take on Madonna University (Mich.) on a neutral field on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 pm CST.
