SAINT LOUIS – Things looked bleak for the Missouri Baptist Women after a half of basketball against St. Louis College of Pharmacy (Mo.). A turnaround in the final 20 minutes, however, proved to be the difference in an 81-67 win in the Central West End.
Missouri Baptist (9-8, 7-6 AMC) struggled to contain St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Saturday after a strong second quarter put the Spartans squarely behind the eight-ball. The Eutectics outscored the Spartans 26-16 in the second period of play, which setup a gutsy comeback effort in the final half of play.
The Spartans played even to the Eutectics in the opening quarter, but fell behind in the second as the College of Pharmacy offense heated-up. The home team shot over 66 percent (10-15) and was 3-5 from three-point range as they opened-up a 41-33 lead.
Missouri Baptist began to move the ball with more confidence in the second half and the score indicated the shift in momentum. A 9-2 run by the visitors to begin the second half became the story as the Spartans brought themselves back to within one.
The Spartans, led by the strong shooting of Shay Robinson and
Amanda Rowden, tied the game heading into the final quarter and put the game away in the last 10 minutes. The duo combined for 27 points as the three-ball began to fall for just about anyone wearing navy on the court.
Missouri Baptist was led by
Amanda Rowden's 15 points on the day. The senior forward was 3-4 from three-point range, but wasn't the most effective shooter from deep. That honor went to
Jessica Moore, who finished with eight points and was 2-2 from downtown.
Shay Robinson recorded four assists to go along with her 12 points while
Chantelle Smith posted a career-high 12 points.
Briya Wilborn recorded four steals in the game. The senior guard became the No. 1 player in the nation in steals and steals per game after her six-steal performance on Thursday against Park (Mo.).
Morgan Dermody did it all for the Eutectics and finished with a 10-point, 13 rebound double-double. Allison Dewald led the home team with 16 points while Keelyn Stein chipped-in 15 of her own.
Next up for the Spartans will be a tough matchup against William Woods (Mo.) at the friendly confines of the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
