SPARTANS SLIDE PAST OWLS IN FOUR SETS

ST. LOUIS—Missouri Baptist hosted the Owls of William Woods (Mo.) on Tuesday evening. After a long match of back and forth, the Spartans came out on top in four sets, remaining undefeated in the American Midwest Conference.

The match quickly began with the teams going point for point. Tied at 14, two kills from Maggie Sorensen put MBU ahead (16-14). From there, the Spartans maintained the lead, eventually taking set one, 25-22.

The second set was another slow start for each team. The squads found themselves tied again (5-5), this time with the Owls pulling away early on. William Woods led by seven when errors began to take over. The Spartans used that to their advantage, attempting a comeback run, but they fell just short. WWU would take set two, 25-21.

The Owls maintained momentum heading into the third set as they took an early lead (5-0). William Woods continued to stay ahead until errors began to plague them, once again. MBU managed to catch up this time around, tying things up at 11 apiece and then taking the lead. The Spartans went on to win set three, 25-18.

Set four was another close one as the Owls continued to press the No. 3 ranked Spartans. However, they fell just short of the fifth set. Missouri Baptist would take the match in four sets (25-19), extending their win streak to 27.

Megan Huffman dished out 43 assists, with outside hitter Mallory Moran leading the way in kills (14).

Maggie Sorensen and Caterina Cigarini had impressive performances, each finishing up the match with a total of 13 kills. The duo also helped lead the defensive effort, with Cigarini putting up five blocks (one solo) and Sorensen clocking out at 13 digs.

The Spartans are back in action on Friday, October 26. They will take on the No. 1 ranked Park University Pirates in the American Midwest Conference Game of the Week. The highly anticipated match begins at 6 p.m at the Petty SRC.
