MEN’S SOCCER WRAPS UP REGULAR SEASON WITH 1-1 DRAW

ST. LOUIS—[BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist men's soccer concluded the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 1-1 draw against Lindenwood-Belleville. The Spartans now enter next week's AMC postseason tournament as the No. 3 seed.

Locked into third place to start the day, Missouri Baptist came out slightly flat on Saturday against the Lynx. Much of the opening 45 was spent in MBU territory though nothing came of it for the visitors from across the river. Each team managed just a single shot on goal in the first half.

The game would open up in the second half, however. Just two minutes after the restart, Belleville's Umar Mohamed found space toward the left side of the MBU penalty area. The freshman beat Spartan keeper Davide Bucarelli with a well-placed shot for the game's first goal.

The wake-up call was received by Missouri Baptist. In the 63rd minute, Brandon Boos had an opportunity on a counter-attack. The sophomore spotted LUB keeper Adrian Mana off his line and decided to let fly from a significant distance. Mana was able to get a fingertip on it, enough to provide the slightest deflection, and the ball caromed off the underside of the cross bar. Unsure whether the ball had crossed the line or not, the referee referred to his assistant who waived it off.

As the saying goes, however, "ball don't lie." Barely a minute after he was allegedly denied by the woodwork, Boos maneuvered around several defenders into the Lynx penalty area and, this time, ensured the ball hit the back of the net. The Michigan native beat the keeper Mana to the short side for his first of the year to tie the game at one.

The defenses would lock things down for both sides from that point forward. The match continued through two overtimes but neither side could find a winner. Mana and Bucarelli would each finish with seven saves for their team in goal.

"We came out a bit comfortable, knowing the result didn't affect our position in the standings," noted MBU Head Coach Jake Alvernia. "I thought our response was better as we went on. I'm proud of our team. First time in MBU history we went undefeated at home."

Missouri Baptist finishes the regular season with an overall record of 11-4-3 (7-2-2 in the AMC). The rematch with Lindenwood-Belleville will take place next Saturday, November 3, at 12 pm at Spartan Field. The Lynx finished the season as the No. 6 seed in the AMC.

*Notes*
  • The Spartans honored this season's five seniors with a special halftime ceremony.
  • Senior Jake Smith was included in the starting lineup one final time after suffering a season ending injury earlier this year. Smith was subbed off after the opening kickoff to a standing ovation from his teammates and fans.
