SPARTANS SWEEP EUTECTICS; ADVANCE TO AMC SEMIFINAL

ST. LOUIS—Women's Volleyball kicked off postseason play on Tuesday evening, hosting the Eutectics of St. Louis College of Pharmacy in the American Midwest Conference quarterfinals. The Spartans claimed a sweep over the Eutectics, advancing to the conference tournament semifinal.

The first two sets started off slow for MBU. Errors combined with tough defense from the Eutectics kept the score tight throughout each set.

Tied at 13-13 in set one, a kill from Sophia Cristiani gave the Spartans possession, allowing them to run away with the lead. College of Pharmacy fought back, but MBU went on to take the first set, 25-17.

The second set nearly mirrored the previous, with the teams finding themselves tied yet again (10-10). Kills from Maggie Sorensen, Mallory Moran and Cristiani eventually put the Spartans ahead again. They maintained the lead from there, taking set two, 25-18.

A couple of lineup changes heading into the third set helped the Spartans gain momentum, as they quickly took the lead. Missouri Baptist led by eight when the Eutectics called for a timeout, however, that did not halt their scoring run. The Spartans went on to take set three, 25-12.

Mallory Moran led the match in kills by a landslide, clocking out at a total of 18 (.387 attack percentage). Fellow seniors Ana Oliveira and Maggie Sorensen each finished with nine.

Megan Huffman dished out 33 assists, while libero Rachel Luebbers racked up 16 digs.

With this win, the No. 3 ranked Spartans advance to the conference semifinal match where they will face off with the (4) Columbia Cougars. Game time is set for Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Parkville, Mo.
