BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Missouri Baptist University women's basketball team didn't have an answer for No. 19 Lyon College on Saturday despite battling early in the game. The Spartans yielded 100 points for the third time this season falling on the road to Lyon, 101-62.
The Scots (8-1, 5-0 AMC) pushed their winning streak to eight and remain perfect in American Midwest Conference play, while Missouri Baptist (3-8, 2-5 AMC) has now lost three straight and five of its last six contests.
Late in the first quarter, the Spartans grabbed their first and only lead of the game (16-15) with a
Caroline Rogers 3-point field goal, but it went downhill from there. Lyon held the Spartans scoreless for the next two minutes and scored six unanswered points to take a 21-16 lead into the next stanza.
MBU's shooting struggles continued, which aided in Lyon scoring the first 19 points of the second period. Paired with the last two minutes of the first quarter, the Scots went on a 25-0 run before the next made field goal by the Spartans.
Sophomore guard
Rose Wassef finally ended the drought with a 3-pointer assisted by
Nicole Griesenauer with 3:04 remaining in the half. In total, the Spartans went nine minutes and 34 seconds without scoring. Missouri Baptist trailed 50-23 at halftime.
After the break, Lyon continued to distance itself and put the game away by outscoring the Spartans 24-16 in the third period. With one quarter remaining, the 35-point deficit was too large to overcome.
Five Scots scored in double figures and were led by Ali Tucker, who was unstoppable on Saturday. The senior guard was a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor and hit all five of her 3-point attempts to finish with a game-high 21 points. The Scots' starters combined for 72 points, helped their team shoot 55 percent on the day and helped out-rebound the Spartans, 49-28.
For the Spartans, freshman
Nicole Griesenauer had a career day registering her best marks of the season in points (14), field goals made (6), 3-point field goals made (2), steals (3) and assists (2).
Caroline Rogers also had an efficient day for Missouri Baptist with eight points. She shot 3-for-4 from the field, 2-of-3 from long range and grabbed three boards as well.
The Spartans will look to put an end to their losing streak on Tuesday when they visit NCAA DII Missouri S&T for a non-conference tilt prior to Christmas Break.
