SPARTANS WIN SIXTH IN A ROW

BELLEVILLE, ILL.—The Missouri Baptist Spartans traveled to Belleville, Illinois to take on conference opponent Lindenwood University-Belleville. In their previous match, the Spartans prevailed 3-0, and this time proved to be no different as the Spartans did it again (25-20, 25-19, 25-15). With the win, MBU improves to 12-1 on the season, and 4-0 in conference play.

Sophomore outside hitter Luka Cajic led the Spartans with 12 kills and four digs, while junior outside hitter Steven Rodriguez followed close behind with eight kills (583 hitting percentage). Junior middle blocker Cameron Hibbler finished with five kills on five attempts.

The Spartans jumped out to a quick lead, forcing an early timeout by the Lynx. Out of the timeout, multiple errors from the Lynx helped push the Spartan lead to six points. After another timeout by the Lynx, the Spartans would continue to push their lead. Following a kill from Foley, Huizinga chipped one in as well, earning the Spartans the first set win, 25-20.

The Lynx got out to an early lead the second time around. Two consecutive errors from the Lynx allowed the Spartans to tie the score at four a piece. From here, both teams would begin to exchange points back and forth. With Cajic on the service line, the Spartans went on a three point scoring run to take a 12-9 lead. LU-Belleville fired back with their own scoring run to close the Spartans lead to one point. Huizinga eventually used tough serving to push the Spartans ahead by five. With both teams trading points again, the Spartans took a late five-point lead. A kill from Hibbler finished things off, giving the second set to the Spartans, 25-19.

The Spartans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third, thanks to smart serving from Foley. More tough service runs from the Spartans proved to be too much for the Lynx to handle. With a comfortable lead, MBU looked to the bench for some substitutions. Freshman opposite hitter Clay Mathison got involved in the offense, registering three kills late in the final set. A kill from from Cajic sealed the deal, as the Spartans took the third set win and match, 25-14.
