ST. LOUIS –
[BOX SCORE] The Spartans extended their winning streak to nine on Friday behind Brewster's second consecutive complete game. Missouri Baptist broke out the mercy rule on Freed-Hardeman beating them 12-2 in seven innings.
Â
The Lions got to
Robby Brewster early in the first inning by plating two runs. A couple of leadoff singles got the rally started. The singles were followed by an RBI double from Josh Sears and a sacrifice fly from Darcy Moore.
Â
Drew Brooks got one back for the Spartans in the bottom of the first on a line drive home run to right field. His fifth home run of the year cut the Lion lead to 2-1 after the first inning.
Â
Brewster shut the visitors down in the second inning to open the door for the Spartan offense. Â With two runners on,
Tommy Nawa kicked started a big day with a single up the middle, giving the Spartans a one run lead.
Â
"Robby got through the first inning and after that he was outstanding," said Coach
Eddie Uschold. After a rough start to the afternoon, Brewster settled in nicely, keeping the Freed-Hardeman offense quiet through the sixth inning.
Â
Clinging to a one run lead, the Spartans decided it was time to bust through with some offense. The bottom of the sixth saw nine runners come home on five hits and two defensive errors.
Â
Brewster finished the AMC rival off in the seventh, ending the game early due to the 10-run mercy rule. The 12-2 final score gave the Spartans their ninth win in a row.
Â
"Brewster's complete game gave us the opportunity to save the entire bullpen for tomorrow's doubleheader," said Coach Uschold. He also added, "It was a nice start, but we still have to win the series to make it a good weekend."
Â
Tommy Nawa also had a big day at the plate going 2-2 with four RBIs. The Spartans are now tied for third in the AMC with a 6-2 record and a 14-10 record overall.
Â
Freed-Hardeman returns to Spartan Field Saturday afternoon to finish off the series with a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
