ST. LOUIS—Missouri Baptist (29-16, 13-7 AMC) and Williams Baptist (23-17, 14-10 AMC) split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon leaving the AMC Softball playoff race as muddled as ever with a week to go in the regular season.
Â
The Spartans took game one 2-0 behind a gem from starting pitcher
Baleigh Koester. The freshman allowed just five hits and no runs in a complete game effort. Koester also continued her push to lead the AMC in strikeouts, fanning eight Eagles hitters in game one.
Â
The MBU offense had just two hits in the first five innings but finally cashed in to help their pitcher in the sixth. After
Reily Kassay reached on an error,
Jordan Corby delivered an RBI single that broke the 0-0 deadlock. Three batters later it was another single, this time from
Meghan Mollet, that scored
Caitlin McNiff. Koester closed it down in the seventh to earn her AMC-leading 18
th win.
Â
Hits were once again tough to come by in game two. Williams Baptist sent junior Catherine Totty to the pitcher's circle and the Haslet, Texas native stymied the Spartans from the start. MBU could not manage a single hit and the visiting Eagles came away with a 6-0 victory to earn the split.
Â
Koester once again started for MBU and didn't allow an earned run in two innings of work.
Ally Dunaway and
Delissa Dennison combined to contain the Eagles in the final five innings.
Â
The Spartans are now 13-7 in the AMC and sit fifth in the conference at the conclusion of play on Saturday. The top eight qualify for the postseason tournament in Columbia, Mo. beginning May 1. MBU will be back in action on Monday as they host Lindenwood-Belleville at 2 pm.
