Game Recap: Baseball |

SPARTANS TAKE TWO FROM WILLIAM WOODS

ST. LOUIS—Missouri Baptist Baseball (27-16, 19-8 AMC) won both games of a doubleheader over William Woods (29-21, 17-12 AMC) on Friday afternoon. They will go for a sweep in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon.

The visiting Owls had a 2-0 lead on Spartan starter Robby Brewster in game one when the bats got going in the third inning. An RBI single from Drew Brooks and a RBI double from Dominique Hernandez tied the game.

After falling behind again in the top of the fourth, MBU scored two in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 lead. A double from Caleb Dean (his second of three doubles in the game) got the inning started. A single from John Hagan was followed by a wild pitch and Gabriel Castillo then tied the game with a sac fly. The Spartans took the lead on a successful squeeze bunt from by General McArthur.

It was 5-3 entering the final frame but William Woods sent nine men to the plate and cashed in for three runs on the MBU bullpen. That put the home side behind by a run heading into the bottom of the seventh.

MoBap needed one more rally to tie or win the game and Domonique Hernandez got it started with a leadoff double. After a Mason Washington base hit, Roosevelt Henderson came through with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game. Still without an out in the inning, Tyler Schmidt pinch hit for Tommy Nawa. He was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That brought Caleb Dean, the Spartans' hottest hitter, to the plate. The junior didn't need to swing the bat on this occasion though. He drew a game-winning walkoff base on balls and the Spartans came away with a 7-6 victory.

The second game of the day would not be nearly as dramatic but the result was just as enjoyable for Missouri Baptist. The Spartans touched up Owls' starter Dany Paradis-Giroux for five runs in the fourth inning. It began with a leadoff double from Roosevelt Henderson. Caleb Dean followed with a line drive home run over the left field fence. John Hagan then doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. That set up a sac fly from Gabriel Castillo. The final two runs of the inning were once again plated via the long ball. Dillon Harp's second of the year and Drew Brooks seventh of 2018 made it 6-2 after four.

William Woods cut into the lead in the seventh but Caleb Dean put an end to any hopes of a comeback in the bottom of the frame. His second home run of the game cleared the scoreboard in left field and drove in Mason Washington and Roosevelt Henderson. That made it 9-3 and that would go on to be the final score. Dean finished the day a combined 6-7 with six RBIs, two doubles, and two home runs.
Bryan Morales earned the win with three strong innings out of the bullpen. Austin Schiber started the game and allowed one earned run in four innings. The senior set a new career-high with eight strikeouts.

The Spartans will conclude the regular season against the Owls on Saturday afternoon. 11 seniors will be recognized with a pregame ceremony beginning at 11:30. First pitch is scheduled for noon.

Missouri Baptist has secured the three seed in next week's AMC postseason tournament in Joplin, Mo. They will take on Harris-Stowe at 7 pm on May 2.
