ST. LOUIS—Spartan Softball pulled off the upset over second-seeded Lyon College on Tuesday morning in the first round of pool play in the AMC Tournament. MBU now advances straight to Wednesday where they will play at 11 am against the winner of Columbia and Williams Baptist.
The seventh seeded Spartans jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning and then relied on their freshman sensation,
Baleigh Koester, to take them over the finish line. An RBI single from
Caitlin McNiff in the first inning was the only offense supplied by either side.
After McNiff's RBI in the opening frame, MBU managed just one more hit in the remaining six innings on Scots' starter Nicole Sanders. On the other side, Koester didn't allow a hit until there was one out the sixth inning. She would walk two more in the frame to load the bases but struck out Lyon's Riley Shaw to get out of the jam. A perfect seventh inning preserved the win and sent Missouri Baptist into the next round of pool play on Wednesday.
The Spartans are now 30-20 overall on the season. The full schedule and bracket for the AMC Tournament can be found
