SPARTANS CLAIM VICTORY IN HOME OPENER

ST. LOUIS—The Missouri Baptist Spartans hosted the Trojans of Trinity International (Ill.) on Tuesday evening. The No. 3 ranked Spartans came out on top, as they took their first sweep of the season in front of a packed house at the Petty SRC.

The first set of the match was a tight one, as the teams traded points back and forth early on. Neither team had led by more than three points nearly the entire set. The score was eventually tied at 21 apiece when a kill from Caterina Cigarini gave MBU the advantage (22-21). An error from the Trojans and another Spartan kill put them at game point, however, a kill from Trinity International kept them in the game (22-24). Unfortunately for them, it was to no avail, as an error would cost them set one (25-22).

The Spartans made a few lineup changes heading into the second set, and it played to their advantage as they rolled out to a quick lead. With adrenaline running at an all-time high, MBU did not allow the Trojans to score more than two points at a time without taking back possession for most of the set. Missouri Baptist was up 23-12 when a couple of Spartan errors, along with kills from TIU kept them alive a bit longer (16-23). Ultimately, errors would catch up to them again, as MBU claimed set two, 25-17.

Set three was another nail-biter as the teams went back and forth, once again. It was a tight match, but MBU eventually began to pull away. After multiple kills and tough blocks from MBU's front line, they took set three, and the match (25-18).

Outside hitter Mallory Moran led the match in kills with a total of 12. Caterina Cigarini followed closely behind with a total of 10.

Player of the Game Maggie Sorensen dominated at the net, as well, earning three kills and four blocks, two of which were solo.

Libero Rachel Luebbers clocked out at a season-high of 21 digs, while setters Aubrey Wilson and Nicole Bott finished with 17 and 14 assists, respectively.

The Spartans return home in a couple of weeks, but for now, they are Florida bound. The squad hits the road on Thursday to take on the Lions of Florida Memorial University. First serve is set for 2 PM (CST).
