ST. LOUIS— Missouri Baptist Women's Soccer continued the quest for its first win of the season on Tuesday afternoon but were denied by St. Ambrose (Iowa) in overtime.
After struggling to generate scoring chances in each of their first two games, the reshuffled Spartan starting lineup started quickly on Tuesday. The finishing part, however, still left something to be desired. Two early attempts from Cassie Willhite were stonewalled by Bees' goalkeeper Molly McLaughlin in the third minute.
Willhite had another opportunity turned away later in the half.
Allie Heinz was also denied before having a second chance blocked. The Spartans launched eight shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes but could not crack McLaughlin.
At the other end, the MBU defense didn't allowed the St. Ambrose attack any space. The Bees didn't manage their first shot on goal until the opening minute of the second half. The home side would turn up the heat after that but Spartan goalkeeper
Jemica Artillaga was up to the challenge. The junior made three saves in the second half to keep the game scoreless.
With no goals after the full 90 minutes, overtime was needed. Five minutes into the sudden death extra period, SAU's Katie Reitz finally solved Artillaga to win it for the home side.
The defeat brings the Spartans' record to 0-3. They'll continue to search for their first victory on Saturday against (RV) Siena Heights. Kickoff in Adrian, Mich. is set for noon.
