ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Spartans picked up their second win of the football season on Saturday defeating Trinity International University 20-13.
John Lux,
Isaiah King, and
Darian Pollion acted as the major cogs in the offense combining for three touchdowns through the air. Missouri Baptist paced their opponents in offensive yards yet again picking up 332 against Trinity's 299 yards.
The game could not have had a better start for the Spartans. The strong MBU defense forced a three-and-out on the Trojans' first possession. The offense followed that up with a two-play drive that ended with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Lux to King. After a successful point-after attempt, MBU held a 7-0 lead.
The score remained 7-0 until late in the second quarter. The Trojan ground attack woke up and marched the offense down the field and into the end zone. A failed two-point conversion kept the visitors in the lead heading into halftime.
After another brief scoring hiatus, the Spartans orchestrated another two-play touchdown drive. Senior
Kendell Davis set the stage with a 26-yard rush and the Lux-King connection finished off the drive with a 47-yard touchdown pass to tighten the grip on the lead.
MBU scored again as time expired in the third quarter on
Darian Pollion's six-yard touchdown reception. A failed point-after attempt kept the score 20-6 after three quarters.
Jimmy Campbell did his best to keep the Trojans in the game with a 74-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Fortunately for the Spartans, their defense came up big and made sure that the home offense stayed quiet for the remainder of the game.
John Lux led the offense with a three-touchdown performance that included 164 yards and fourteen completions. Senior
Isaiah King continued his mid-season hot streak with two more touchdowns and 87 yards on four receptions.
Defensively,
Donovan Baldwin stood out with a team-leading seven tackles and two tackles for a loss.
DaCorey McGee also had seven tackles and
Collin Thomas collected five with an interception.
The football season continues Saturday as (15) Saint Xavier rolls into town to take on the Spartans in their homecoming game. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at Christian Brothers College High School.
