ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Missouri Baptist University football season ended on Saturday in a senior day sendoff that saw
Isaiah King become the first wide receiver in school history to collect 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. Even though the Spartans dropped the finale 42-7, there were a lot of positive performances including a touchdown reception from
Sergio Lopez and a strong ground attack led by seniors
Chris Baldwin and
Kendell Davis.
The Walsh University Cavaliers opened the scoring in the first quarter when Antwand Wilson Jr. capped off a 10 play, 55-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run. The Spartans found themselves in an early 7-0 hold with 6:36 remaining in the quarter.
MBU would not retaliate until early in the second quarter. Punter/Quarterback extraordinaire,
Josh Munn, had the offense moving and finished it with a three-yard touchdown pass to
Sergio Lopez.
The Cavs struck again late in the second quarter and the Spartans were not able to recover thereafter. Strong Walsh defense and costly turnovers stifled the home team offense as they eventually fell with a 42-7 final score.
On offense,
Chris Baldwin and
Kendell Davis moved the chains effectively all day. Baldwin collected 78 rushing yards while Davis put up a respectable 35 yards on six attempts.
Isaiah King broke the single-season receiving record with six receptions for 85 yards that pushed him over the 1,000-yard mark for the 2019 season.
Sergio Lopez also contributed with three receptions and a touchdown.
On defense,
Joey Morones led the team once again with 11 tackles and an interception.
Austin Richards and
Kenyon Perkins were right on his heels with nine tackles each.
The Spartans end their 2019 campaign with a 2-9 overall record and a 1-5 record in the MSFA Midwest despite being competitive in nearly every game and outgaining their opponents in yards in most contests. While this may be the last football game for the collective team, several Spartans were selected to play in the NAIA Senior Football Classic on December 14, 2019, in Ruston, Louisiana.
