BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. –
[BOX GAME ONE] [BOX GAME TWO] Missouri Baptist softball picked up their first wins of the season on Saturday outscoring their opponents 24-6 in the doubleheader.
Â
The Spartan offense was firing on all cylinders against Blue Mountain College in the first game and it started in a six-run first inning.
Â
After
Madalyn Bone and
Reily Kassay reached base to lead off the game,
Caitlin McNiff got a pitch to her liking and tripled to right field plating them both. McNiff proceeded to steal home on the next play. Later in the inning,
Rachel Galbraith drove in a pair with a single to center field putting MBU up 5-0.
Madalyn Bone drove in the sixth and final run in the inning with a single to right field that scored
Ally Gischer.
Â
With one out in the second inning,
Jordan Corby got another rally started with a double to center field. McNiff stepped up and got the job done with a run scoring single to short. She later scored on
Amber Mobbs' double to center. In the third, MBU capitalized on a Blue Mountain error to make the score 9-0.
Â
The offensive outpour continued as the Spartans slugged their way to seven more runs in the fourth. McNiff began the inning with a double to center field. Megan Elder followed up Cami Meddow's walk with an RBI single to center field. Gischer, Galbraith, Harbaugh, Dublo, and Corby all drove in runs later in the inning to extend the lead to 16-0.
Â
Delissa Dennison made sure to hold up her end of things, pitching four shutout innings. Dennison only surrendering three hits and struck out three. After she was replaced in the fifth, the Toppers answered with six runs. However, it was not nearly enough giving Missouri Baptist softball a 16-6 victory in five innings and their first win of 2019.
Â
Game two against Talladega (Ala.) started in a similar fashion. The Spartans grounded out twice to begin the game but started to heat up after Corby reached on a walk.
Â
After a single and an error, the Spartans stole home yet again when Corby swiped the first run of the game. Elder singled in McNiff and Meddows which widened the lead to 3-0. Two more singles and a walk pushed Elder home for the fourth run. The fifth run of the inning was brought home by a
MaKenzie Harbaugh single to left field.
Â
Three more runs crossed home plate in the top of the second inning after Elder's single and then a throwing error by the Talladega third baseman.
Â
The offense was held scoreless for the final three innings.
Â
Ally Dunaway was the big story of game two, hurling a complete game shutout. Dunaway gave up four hits, one walk, and struck out four.
Â
The Spartans will look to get over .500 in Friday's doubleheader against Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
