SPARTANS DROP 29 ON JARVIS CHRISTIAN

HAWKINS, TEXAS – [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist Baseball swept Jarvis Christian College (Texas) in a doubleheader on Friday in Hawkins, Texas.  After a slow start to the season, the Spartans came out hot on a cold, windy day and grabbed an overwhelming 29-6 win. They followed that with a 3-0 shutout to improve their record to 4-2.

The Spartans' first game opened up with each team exchanging blows in the early innings. MBU took the lead for good in the third inning. They blew it open in the top of the frame with 11 runs, forcing Jarvis Christian to use three pitchers just to finish the inning.

Following the high scoring efforts in the top of the third, Matt Huss locked the Bulldogs down, allowing one hit over three innings with four strikeouts. The Missouri Baptist bullpen only allowed one hit over 5 and 2/3 with 10 strikeouts. The Spartan offense continued to stay hot, scoring 23 runs following the second inning.

The offense was led by the efforts of Dominique Hernandez, who went 6-7 with six RBIs, five runs scored, two doubles, and two triples. The senior fell just a home run short of the cycle. Deshawn Lookout was another standout player (5-7) with five RBIs, two runs scored, and two doubles.

In game two, the Spartans continued the hot start and drew first blood in the opening inning. From that point forward it was a pitcher's duel. Starter Josh Ray struck out the first two batters and then induced a ground out to get the Spartans rolling.

Missouri Baptist continued to roll as they scored two more unanswered runs in the third. Mason Washington had all three RBIs, finishing the day 2-3. Jarvis Christian did not have an answer for Ray.  The junior finished with 4 and 2/3 innings pitched, nine strikeouts, and two hits allowed.  Masen Palmier relieved Ray and earned the save in a shortened five inning game due to darkness.

The Spartans kick off their next doubleheader on Saturday against Texas College (4-5) at 2 pm in Kilgore, Texas.
