ADRIAN, Mich. – Wrapping up its Spring Break trip to Michigan on Thursday, the Missouri Baptist University men's lacrosse team encountered a roadblock at No. 6-ranked Siena Heights falling to the Saints, 10-3. Thursday's loss came on the heels of a 6-5 heartbreaking loss at (RV) Concordia University-Ann Arbor two days prior.
Â
The Spartans are now 2-4 overall as they embark on an extremely tough slate at the end of the month. After their upcoming game at Columbia College on Tuesday, March 19, the Spartans will face No. 5 Keiser (Fla.) and No. 2 Reinhardt (Ga.) on the road followed by No. 3 Cumberlands (Ky.).
Â
Siena Heights opened the scoring at the 10:20 mark in the first period and poured on two more over the next four minutes. The Saints added another goal as time was expiring to take a commanding 4-0 lead after one.
Â
Missouri Baptist needed to halt SHU's momentum out of the break and did just that scoring back-to-back goals to begin the second quarter. Attackman
Jaxon Haas dished out two assists to
Sean Hess (13:44) and
Luke Slagle (12:52) to help slash the lead to just two.
Â
That was the closest the Spartans would get as the Saints rattled off three more scores in the first half to take a 7-2 lead into halftime. SHU extended its advantage to 9-2 before Missouri Baptist scored its third and final goal of the contest.
Andy Coulter recorded his fifth goal of the year while
Noah Boone registered his first point of 2019 with an assist.
Â
The Spartans weren't without scoring opportunities on Thursday as they held a 21-17 advantage in shots on goal. Unfortunately, they were only able to get three past the Saints' stout defense and goalie Vinnie Jean, who had 18 saves on the evening. In addition to limiting MBU to a season-low three goals, Siena Heights was able to hold the Spartans' top two scorers at bay with no goals between
Josh Zion (10 goals) and
Jaxon Haas (7 goals).
Â
Sophomore
Noah Campbell continues to be a bright spot for the Spartans on faceoffs as he was 11 of 14 on faceoff attempts for a 78.5% conversion rate. Defensively, the Spartans caused just four turnovers. Senior long-stick middie
Garett McKelvie led the Spartans in ground balls with four.
