O'FALLON, Mo— (RV) Missouri Baptist Baseball could not get the offense clicking in a 7-2 loss to (20) Lyon College (Ark.) on Friday afternoon. The Scots (22-6, 10-4 AMC) won the series 2-1 and moved 2.5 games ahead of the Spartans (14-8, 7-6 AMC) in the American Midwest Conference standings.
Â
After a pair high scoring shootouts in Thursday's doubleheader, Friday's rubber game was more of a pitcher's duel for much of the day. Through four innings, MBU's
Josh Sieglitz and Lyon's Marcelo Terrazas had each of the opposing offenses off balance. The Scots managed just three hits and a run on Sieglitz while the Spartans mustered two hits and a run.
Â
Sieglitz finally ran into trouble in the fifth. After plunking the leadoff man Jake Michener and allowing a single to Troy Strack, a careless outfield error set the Scots up with second and third. Kylan Barnett then singled up the middle to put the visitors back in the lead at 3-1.
Â
The Spartans cut into the deficit in the sixth, but another mental error once again had Mo. Bap wondering what could've been.
DeShawn Lookout led off with a single and, with one out,
Caleb Dean ripped a line drive off the centerfield wall. As Lookout was being held up at third, Dean took too wide of a turn around second. The throw from the outfield came in just in time before he could get back to the bag. Lookout, meanwhile, came home to score on the play but with the bases now empty, that would be the extent of the damage.
Â
Lyon responded with two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to break it open. The Spartans loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth but couldn't cash in. Lyon escaped with a 7-2 win.
Â
Missouri Baptist will look to get back on track with a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday against No. 16 Central Methodist (Mo.). First pitch is scheduled for noon but location is still TBD pending more inclement weather in St. Louis over the weekend.
