SPARTANS GRAB FIRST TOP-25 WIN SINCE 2016 IN DH SPLIT

ST. LOUIS – With a second chance to topple one of the AMC's top teams this weekend, Missouri Baptist softball prevailed on Saturday by picking up a signature win over No. 18-ranked Lyon College (23-8, 10-4 AMC) in the first game of a doubleheader split. The Spartans leaned on the remarkable pitching from ace Delissa Dennison in a 3-1 victory, but were on the other end of a strong pitching performance getting shut out in Game Two, 7-0.

Missouri Baptist (9-12, 3-3 AMC) produced its first win over a Top 25 opponent since defeating conference foe Freed-Hardeman University twice in 2016. Coincidentally, like the Scots, the Lions also happened to be ranked No. 18 in the NAIA at the time. This marks the first Top 25 win with head coach Ken Messer-Brooks at the helm.

A surefire candidate for AMC Pitcher of the Week, Delissa Dennison went the distance for the Spartans in Game 1 and shut down the Scots late in the game when it mattered most. The only run of the game came on a wind-aided solo home run by Lyon's Cheyenne Black in the top of the 4th.

From the last at-bat in the fourth inning through the first at-bat in the top of the 7th, Dennison struck out eight consecutive Lyon batters and finished the game with a career-high 14 Ks. The junior righthander fifth win of the season and lowered her ERA to 2.62.

Offensively, junior Amber Mobbs jumpstarted the offense with a one-out double down the left field line. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Mobbs was brought home by a bloop to shallow center by Cami Meddows. The Spartans upped the lead to 2-0 in the bottom half of the third on a double by Jordan Corby followed by a Lyon miscue trying to throw out Jordan Corby stealing third. The third run scored by MBU in the sixth provided a two-run cushion for Dennison, although she was handling things just fine from the circle. Leftfielder Amber Mobbs recorded her second double of the game and scored via a wild pitch by Lyon's ace Katelyn Platt.

Cami Meddows joined Mobbs with a team-best two hits in the first game.

Lyon flipped the script in its 7-0 shut out win and for the most part held the Spartans' hitting at bay. Caitlin McNiff and Cami Meddows each recorded one-out doubles in the 2nd and 4th innings, but were left stranded. MBU's three remaining hits did not make it into scoring position.

In addition to strong pitching from Game 2 starter Shyanne Pedroza (7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 4 K), the Scots more than doubled their offensive production from Game 1 totaling 13 hits. They scored a pair of runs in the 2nd, 4th and 7th innings and one in the 5th.

Caitlin McNiff led the way for Missouri Baptist in game two with two hits. Second baseman Jordan Corby was busy defensively pacing the team with 9 putouts.

Up next for the Spartans is a crosstown matchup against St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Tuesday's AMC doubleheader will be played at 2 & 4 p.m. at Forest Park Community College located at 5600 Oakland Ave.
