LINCOLN, Ill. —The No. 1-ranked Missouri Baptist men's volleyball team closed out the regular season on Thursday with a win in three sets over Lincoln College. Additionally, the Spartans earned their seventh consecutive sweep and surpassed a program record for longest single-season winning streak finishing out the regular season with an overall record of 26-0 and 11-0 in conference. The Spartans are still chasing the program record for longest winning streak, which is 32, a number achieved from seven straight to end the 2015 campaign to go along with 25 straight to begin the 2016 season.
Two kills and a service ace put MBU in the lead to start set one (3-0). The Lynx would put their name on the board, but several errors kept the Spartans ahead (9-3). MBU continued to dish out kill after kill, eventually taking set one, 25-14.
Lincoln visibly gained some momentum heading into the second set. The Lynx led 6-4 when outside hitter
Steven Rodriguez put down two kills followed by a service ace to give the Spartans their first lead of the set (7-6). From there, the Lynx kept pace with MBU, but would not pull ahead again. The Spartans sat at a three-point lead (16-13) when a kill from
Cameron Hibbler put him at the service line. The middle blocker served up an ace, which was followed by four consecutive kills from
Luka Cajic to put MBU at set-point (24-13). Two kills from Lincoln's Ramon Matos kept the Lynx alive, but another kill from Cajic quickly shut their chances down. The Spartans took set two, 25-15.
The third set began much like the second, as the Lynx rolled out to another quick lead (4-1). Errors would once again allow the Spartans to even things out, and eventually, take the lead (7-6). The teams continued to go point for point with MBU staying just ahead throughout. The Spartans led by four (23-19) when the tables turned, and errors began to cost them the lead. A service ace from Lincoln's Matos tied the score at 24 apiece, but two more mistakes from the Lynx would give MBU the sweep, 26-24.
