WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – Saturday's series finale between Missouri Baptist (27-13, 15-9 AMC) and Williams Baptist (Ark.) (13-25, 6-18 AMC) was moved up four hours to account for incoming bad weather in northeast Arkansas. First pitch was delivered around 8 am local time. 10 innings later the Spartans finished off a 7-6 victory to claim the rubber game.
Williams Baptist scored first with two runs in the third inning off MBU starter
Masen Palmier. The Spartans responded with three in the fourth. RBI singles from
Michael McGhee,
Drew Brooks, and
Nick Politte made it 3-2 to the visitors.
The Eagles did the Spartans a few favors with errors in both the sixth and seventh innings, leading to two more runs and a 5-2 advantage. The Spartans would then repay the favor with two misplays of their own in the bottom of the eighth. Those mistakes, combined with a home run from WBU's Cam Smith tied the game at five.
The back-and-forth continued in the following frame.
Domonique Hernandez singled with one out and came around to score the go-ahead run on a double by McGhee.
Hayden Crowe relieved
Caleb Dean in the bottom of the ninth and retired the first two hitters he saw. The third man to come to the plate, however, was Cam Smith. Smith greeted Crowe the same way he greeted Dean an inning earlier—with a solo home run. The game went to a 10
th inning knotted at six.
In the extra frame,
Greg Greene drew a one-out walk. After an error on a bunt by
Jose Rivera,
Caleb Dean came to the plate and delivered a clutch hit to score Greene. Crowe remained on in the bottom of the 10
th and, despite allowing a two-out single, retired the Eagles with no damage done to secure the win.
The Spartans out-hit the Eagles 11-7.
Michael McGhee led the way going 3-5.
Drew Brooks and
Caleb Dean also provided multi-hit days. Both seniors finished 2-5 with an RBI.
Masen Palmier contributed his second straight quality start. The sophomore threw seven innings and conceded two runs on four hits. He struck out eight.
The Spartans travel to Henderson, Tenn. on Wednesday for a neutral site doubleheader with William Carey (Miss.). The series will be played on the campus of Freed-Hardeman. First pitch is scheduled for noon. AMC play resumes next Friday at home against Hannibal-LaGrange. With six games remaining on the conference schedule, MBU sits in fourth in the AMC standings.
