HENDERSON, Tenn. – Missouri Baptist Baseball (28-14) traveled to Henderson, Tenn. on Wednesday afternoon for a neutral site doubleheader with William Carey (Miss.) (17-23). Both games finished with lopsided scores as the Spartans and Crusaders traded non-conference wins.
The Spartans return to St. Louis for their final home games of the season on Friday and Saturday. Hannibal-LaGrange will be in town for a three-game series. Missouri Baptist 9, William Carey 1
The Spartans started fast in game one with four runs in the opening inning. After a one-out walk to
Hunter Hill,
DeShawn Lookout struck out but advanced to first by way of a third-strike passed ball. That started a carousel and the Spartans would send 10 men to the plate before the inning was through. After
Mason Washington delivered an RBI single,
Michael McGhee hammered an 0-1 fastball over the left centerfield fence for a 4-0 Mo. Bap lead. It was McGhee's fourth home run of the year and RBIs 27, 28, and 29.
The Spartans continued to add on with a run in the second and three more in third.
DeShawn Lookout's RBI double in the second drove in his team-leading 34
th run of the season. In the third,
Jose Rivera was hit by a pitch and
Caleb Dean drew a walk to set the table for
Hunter Hill. The junior from Big Spring, Texas took the first pitch he saw and lined it over the left field to make it 8-0 good guys. Hill would finish game one 2-2 with three runs scored in addition to tying his career-high with three RBIs.
On the mound,
Josh Sieglitz pitched six solid innings to earn his fifth win of the season. Sieglitz allowed one run on four hits. He struck out nine, just one short of tying his career high.
Anferney Hoeve pitched out of a jam in the seventh to finish off the 9-1 victory.
Missouri Baptist 3, William Carey 9
The second game of the day was a 180 for both teams. This time, it was William Carey who stormed out of the gate to an early lead. The Crusaders scored three in the first before an out was recorded. They added another in the second for a 4-0 lead.
It was 7-0 in the sixth when the Spartans finally generated some offense. After
Jonathon Pasillas was hit by a pitch and
Caleb Dean doubled into the left field corner,
DeShawn Lookout singled to center to score both.
That nearly cut the deficit in half but William Carey responded with two more runs in the top of the seventh to put it out of reach. The final was 9-3.
MBU managed just four hits in the second game. Crusaders' starter Devin Smith struck out 10. William Carey posted 14 hits to score its nine runs. They were also aided by two Spartan errors.
