ST. LOUIS—MBU Women's Soccer (5-1, 5-1 AMC) finally had an offensive explosion on Saturday leading to a 6-0 victory over Williams Baptist (1-8, 1-5 AMC) at Spartan Field. Prior to the match, this year's nine seniors were celebrated with a special ceremony. The Spartans have now completed the fall portion of their schedule and will resume play in March.
It took just six minutes to open the scoring when
Madie Gentry's long pass into the penalty area bounced in favor of
Madison Dodd. Dodd sidestepped a defender and beat the WBU keeper for her first goal of the season.
In the 31
st minute,
Madi Dunahue converted a breakaway to double the lead. Dodd was involved again as she intercepted a goal kick and moved it forward to
Mara George. It was a perfect through-ball from George that sent Dunahue in alone against Eagles' keeper Paige Carlyle. The sophomore went around the charging Carlyle and slotted it home for her second goal of the year.
It remained 2-0 into the 50
th minute when the Spartans began to pour it on. Dunahue added her second goal of the day on a picture perfect free kick from 25 yards out.
In the 61
st minute,
Maddie Mrazik got in on the action with her second goal of the season. Another assist by
Mara George made it 4-0 MBU. Mrazik added a second just three minutes later. This time, Dodd corralled a free kick attempt delivered to the back post and sent a cross back toward the middle of the six-yard box. Mrazik was there to deposit it in the corner and extend the cushion to five. Her third of the year tied Dunahue for the team lead.
The final goal of the day came late with just under a minute to go.
Sami Mabee lofted a shot over the head of the Williams Baptist keeper and into the far corner.
Ashley Strautmann provided the assist for Mabee's first career goal as a Spartan.
The final shot count was an impressive margin of 19-2. The Spartans managed 12 on goal to just one for the Eagles.
Hanna Harrison played just over 73 minutes in the MBU net before giving way to fellow sophomore
Baylee Tyler. Tyler made the only necessary save of the day for the Spartans in her 15+ minutes.
Missouri Baptist finishes the fall portion of the schedule in second place in the AMC, just three points behind defending regular season and tournament champion Columbia (6-0). The conference schedule will resume in March with road trips to Lyon, William Woods, and Stephens still to be played. The AMC Postseason Tournament is scheduled for the first week of April.
