BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Missouri Baptist Softball went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Blue Mountain College Tournament. The Spartans were defeated by Blue Mountain in the first game 4-3 but took the second game 8-1 over Talladega behind strong offensive performances from
Madalyn Bone and
Amber Mobbs.
Game 1 – Blue Mountain (Miss.) 4, Missouri Baptist 3
Delissa Dennison got the start against the Toppers in game one and threw five strong innings only allowing one earned run. That run came in the fifth inning on a ground ball that plated Tori Angulo.
The Spartans quickly answered in the top of the sixth inning after a
Megan Pfeiffer stolen base set up
Ally Gischer's RBI single to center field.
The game remained tied until extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Gischer drove in two more on an RBI double that scored
Madalyn Bone and
Ellie Wessel.
On the brink of losing their first game of the season, Blue Mountain found the extra gear and plated three runs in the bottom half to snatch the victory from MBU.
Game 2 – Talladega (Ala.) 1, Missouri Baptist 8
Saturday's second game was a much different story. The Spartans found their offense in the top of the third inning against Talledega, plating six runs on RBIs from
Amber Mobbs,
Cami Meddows, and
Madalyn Bone.
That was more than enough for freshman pitcher
Haley Tate. Tate shut down the Tornado offense through five innings pitched allowing a lone run with five walks and three strikeouts.
MBU added two more runs in the sixth inning. Bone homered to lead off the frame on a 1-1 count to give her the first of her career. The visitors added another on a Mobbs RBI hit to push the score to 8-1.
Dennison reappeared against the Tornadoes in the sixth and seventh inning to finish off the second Spartans win, allowing only one hit and collecting a strikeout.
Mobbs and Bone collected three RBIs each in the contest as their team combined for thirteen hits and just three punchouts.
The pitching staff combined for just one earned run on five hits and four strikeouts.
