ELGIN, Ill. – Missouri Baptist men's volleyball swept two ranked opponents on Friday, completing a perfect tournament run while extending their 13-game winning streak. MBU now sits 14-2 on the season after winning every possible set at the Judson University Invitational.
The Spartans came out with their hair on fire in the first set against Lourdes, taking a commanding 19-9 lead in set one thanks to a 10-1 mid-set run. MBU registered four kills and three service aces in that period.
The Gray Wolves continued to battle but were ultimately finished off with a 25-18 final score.
Set two was much closer. Missouri Baptist found themselves down 23-22 before they came storming back to a victory on kills by
Jason Harman and
Luka Cajic.
The Spartans dominated set three to take the sweep over the fourth-ranked Lourdes University. Cajic and Kastratovic both had double-digit kills in the match while Harman piled 30 assists.
The ninth-ranked Aquinas was the next team to fall victim to an MBU sweep. The first set went to extra time but two kills by Kastratovic finished off the opposition with a 28-26 score.
Both squads went on mid-set runs in the second frame and once again it came down to the wire. With the contest all knotted up at 24, Harman set up a clutch
Drew Iliff kill to take a one-point lead.
Mario Lucas came up with an ace on the final play to put his team up 2-0.
With a chance to get through the whole weekend without losing a set, Lucas and Kastratovic ended a 23-23 game in the third set to give the Spartans a 4-0 tournament run.
As a team, the Spartans posted nine service aces and 32 digs against Aquinas. Haman collected 41 more assists while Cajic, Kastratovic, and Lucas paced the offense with 34 combined kills.
The men's volleyball season opens conference play on Wednesday, February 12 against (6) Park University. The opening serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Parkville, Missouri.
