ST. LOUIS—Missouri Baptist Women's Soccer scored first on Saturday afternoon but ultimately couldn't hold off No. 13 Columbia in a 5-1 defeat at Spartan Field. Prior to the match,
Ashley Strautmann and
Sami Mabee were honored as the two members of this year's graduating senior class.
In a rematch of the last two AMC Championship games, MBU held its own throughout much of the first half. It took 25 minutes for the home side to get on the board first. Sophomore
Jamie Theusch netted one of the goals of the season off a free kick from 25 yards out. It was Theusch's first of the year.
The goal seemed to wake Columbia up, however. The Cougars tied the game in the 31
st minute, took the lead on an own goal in the 38
th, and went into halftime up 3-1 after a late marker by reigning AMC Player of the Year Jewel Morelan in the 41
st.
The Spartans didn't go away quietly. They had a legitimate shout for a penalty midway through the second half when
Madi Dunahue was tripped just outside the six-yard box. No foul was given and just minutes later Columbia delivered a dagger with a fourth goal. Shortly after that they added a fifth.
Missouri Baptist (8-9, 6-3 AMC) concludes the regular season in fourth place in the AMC standings and will meet fifth place Lyon (5-9-2, 3-5-1 AMC) next Friday night at Spartan Field in the AMC Quarterfinals. Start time is scheduled for 7 pm.
