ST. LOUIS – Following an impressive season debut at the Coe College Invite this weekend, Missouri Baptist University Senior Steven Weathers has been named American Midwest Conference (AMC) Wrestler of the week, the league office announced Monday. This is Weathers first career AMC wrestler of the Week award and the Spartans' first for the 2021-22 season.

The Highland Park, Ill. native secured the individual title at 149-pounds after picking up four consecutive victories. In the opening round Weathers would end the match early with a 43 second fall in the first period. In his next two matches to earn his way into the finals Weathers would win via decision 10-6 against Landon Card from Cornell College and via major decision 10-1 against Luke Radeke of Dubuque.

In the final bout Weathers fell behind early getting taken down less than 15 seconds into the match but quickly earned an escape and a takedown of his own within the first minute of the bout. The second period saw very little scoring as Dylan Falck recorded an escape to tie the match up 3-3. With riding time well over two minutes Weathers has some time to work but needs to earn an escape to preserve that extra point. In the third and final period Weathers earned a quick escape only six seconds into the period and despite giving up a penalty point with less than 15 seconds to go in the match that tied things up at four apiece, Weathers would go on to win 5-4 with his riding time point proving to be the difference.

Weathers and MBU will look to continue their success as they welcome Hannibal-LaGrange University and Lincoln College to the Carl & Deloris Sports & Recreation Complex on Dec. 10 @ 7 p.m. The probable matchups for Weathers at 149 pounds are HLGU's Brayden McFarland and Lincoln College's Dominic Tenayuca.
