COLUMBIA, Mo. – MBU Women's Soccer scored first on Monday night but ultimately succumbed to a persistent Columbia (16-3) attack in a 5-1 defeat. The Cougars eliminated the Spartans from the AMC Tournament for the third consecutive season.
It was a bright start for MBU as
Madi Dunahue opened the scoring in the 14
th minute.
Hannah Leahy provided the assist on a goal from close to 20 yards out.
Just as they did when the Spartans scored first in the last meeting on October 30, the goal seemed to get the attention of the 13
th ranked Cougars. Reigning AMC Player of the Year Jewel Morelan tied the game just 19 seconds later. Morelan would then assist on a marker by Macie Lucas in the 42
nd minute.
The Spartans still had life down only 2-1 at halftime but Columbia quickly crushed those hopes after the intermission. The Cougars scored in the 57
th, 59
th, and 61
st minutes to pull away.
Hanna Harrison finished with four saves for MBU before giving way to true freshman
Lindzey Morrison for the final 15 minutes.
The Spartans' season ends with a record of 9-10. Columbia will meet Harris-Stowe in the championship game on Thursday.
