SPARTANS STAVE OFF STATESMEN IN 10-7 ROAD WIN

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – With a front-loaded schedule including two ranked opponents and another that is now receiving votes, the quest for win No. 1 wasn't the easiest for the Missouri Baptist men's lacrosse team, but it finally arrived on Saturday. The Spartans went on the road and defeated (RV) William Penn University by a score of 10-7.

In addition to securing its first-ever Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) win, MBU also snapped a six-game losing skid that dated back to the conclusion of the 2019 season. The Spartans are now 1-3 on the year, while William Penn dropped to 2-5, 0-2 KCAC.

MoBap couldn't have asked for a better start defensively. The Spartans kept William Penn in check the entire first half limiting the Statesmen to six shots in each of the first two periods. Of WPU's 12 shots, seven were on target and each one was corralled by Spartan goalie Hunter Filla.

With the Statesmen offense irrelevant, the Spartans capitalized on finding the back of the net twice in the opening period. Senior Alex Todd put Missouri Baptist on the scoreboard at the 8:03 mark, and Fontbonne University transfer Alex Scott added one more with 34 seconds remaining to make it a 2-0 ballgame heading into the second.

Much like the first period, it wasn't until midway through the quarter that the shots started falling. Ian Olenski stretched the lead to three at 7:17. Minutes later attackman Jaxon Haas scored back-to-back goals and Scott added another for good measures as the Spartans took a commanding 6-0 shutout into the locker room.

Missouri Baptist and William Penn traded goals to start the second half, but the Statesmen began to push for a comeback late in the third. With four unanswered goals, William Penn cut what seemed to be a comfortable six-point lead down to two entering the fourth.

MBU settled down in the fourth and managed to keep William Penn at bay for the remainder of the contest allowing just one goal in the final 15 minutes.

Individually, Alex Scott paced the Spartans with 4 goals and 2 assists for a team-best 6 points. Jaxon Haas posted his fourth career hat trick successfully connecting all three of his shots on goal.

Ian Olenski and Alex Todd, who's had the lion's share of the shots against William Penn, combined for 3 goals on 24 shot attempts (11 SOG). Todd chipped in a team- and game-high 3 assists.

Other stat leaders for the Spartans on Saturday included Noah Boone with 6 ground balls, Teddy Herold and Boone with 1 caused turnover apiece, and Hunter Filla with 10 saves.

Missouri Baptist returns to the field on Thursday, March 18 at the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kan.
