ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Spartans improved their conference record to 13-4 after shutting down the Mustangs at home on senior day.
Drew Iliff returned just in time to be celebrated along with setter
Jason Harman for their impressive five-year careers at Missouri Baptist.
Â
Miljan Kastratovic set the tone for the entire afternoon early in set one. The junior recorded a kill on five of his team's first seven points to jolt them to a 7-4 lead. Iliff posted a kill for the eighth point followed shortly by a kill from
Daniel Borsi and a service ace from
Milos Markovic.
Â
The Mustangs battled back to within three at 15-12 before three visitor errors highlighted a four-point scoring run from MBU. The Spartans took the separation and ran with it until they finished set one with a 25-16 final.
Â
Gabe Norsigian took charge of the offense to start the second frame. He scored three of the first five for the Spartans to push them ahead 5-1. Several scoring runs in the middle of the set had Mount Mercy on the ropes.
Â
Up 23-12, Borsi collected two kills on assists from
Jason Harman to put his team up 2-0.
Â
The Mustangs came out strong in the third taking a 12-11 lead midway through. An attack error tied the set followed by a kill from Kastratovic, a service ace from junior libero
