OTTAWA, Kan. – Coming off a nearly one-month hiatus, the No. 5-ranked Missouri Baptist University women's volleyball team ran into a buzz saw Monday afternoon as No. 24 Ottawa University picked up the 3-0 sweep. The Braves won by scores of 31-29, 25-16, and 25-18 to hand the Spartans their first loss since the season opener. MBU's 14-match winning streak came to an end on Monday.
It also marked the first time in the series that Ottawa came out victorious. Before Monday's matchup, Missouri Baptist had collected three straight sweeps in the all-time series and held a 6-0 record against the Braves
Much to the Spartans' dismay, No. 24 Ottawa was firing on all cylinders, including its attack, blocking, serving, and passing. The Braves out-hit the NAIA's No. 1-ranked team in hitting percentage .321 to .140., which was a season-low for the Spartans. Additionally, OU finished the match with an 11-4 advantage in blocks and 6-1 advantage in service aces, another stat category that the Spartans sat atop the NAIA in.
MBU's top hitters Isidora Stojovic (7 K, 7 E, .000 %) and Giovanna Tapigliani (8 K, 7 E, .038 %), were held in check, while the middle blockers found better luck with their efficiency. Raylyn Dodd and Sara Klunder combined for 16 kills with a .303 hitting percentage.
Other stat leaders on the day included freshman setter Shannon McLain with 33 assists, freshman outside hitter Maria Hanusik with the lone service ace, and senior libero Ariana Macies with 11 kills.
The Spartans return home this weekend to begin wrapping up the AMC regular season. However, they will make one quick pit-stop in Fayette, Mo., to take on No. 9-ranked Central Methodist University. The first serve is set for 5 p.m.
