ST. LOUIS—MBU Men's Soccer (10-4) needed overtime to defeat the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (3-8) in the AMC Quarterfinals on Saturday night at Spartan Field.
Louie Perez's sixth goal of the season, a little more than two minutes into the extra period, secured a 4-3 victory.
Missouri Baptist came in as the 2-seed and the heavy favorite over the 7-seed UHSP that won just one conference match in the regular season. The start was somewhat expected as a strike from
Brandon Burton beat Eutectics' keeper Alec Johnson to the near post in the 13
th minute for a 1-0 lead.
That advantage, however, would last less than two minutes. Against the run of play, UHSP's Jakob Skorupa lofted a shot to the far corner that MBU keeper
Davide Bucarelli couldn't reach. Five minutes later, Skorupa was involved again as the Eutectics took the lead. Grant Woodard's shot was spilled by Bucarelli and Skorupa was johnny-on-the-spot to poke the rebound over the goal line.
There was no panic from the Spartans and in the 28
th minute they leveled the score on another goal from Burton. The junior's sixth of the season and fifth in the last three games came off an assist from fellow Brit
Joe Ruane.
It looked as though the match would go into the halftime break still tied but the Spartans were gifted the go-ahead marker on an own goal with three minutes before intermission.
UHSP responded again in the second half, tying the game once more on a free kick in the 72
nd minute. Neither team could pull ahead in the final 15 minutes and overtime was necessary.
Just over two minutes into the golden goal period,
Louie Perez stole the ball off a throw-in and made his way all the way into the UHSP penalty area. From the top of the box, Perez's left footed shot beat Johnson for the game-winner.
The Spartans' season will now continue Tuesday with the AMC Semifinals. They will host the 3-seed Lyon College. Start time is still to be determined.
