MBU HANDLES MIDLAND WITH EASE IN 15-5 SENIOR DAY WIN

ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist University women's lacrosse team finished off the regular season and its Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) schedule with a decisive 15-5 win over Midland University on Monday. Playing at Spartan Field for just the second time all spring, MoBap celebrated Senior Day for Ashley Avery, Melina Custer, Kaitlin Mills, and Jessica Scalise, with its eighth win in nine games.

With a pair of home games against St. Ambrose and Morningside canceled due to COVID, the Spartans completed their second KCAC season with a 7-1 record against conference opponents. MBU's only loss in conference came this past weekend at No. 4-ranked Benedictine (Kan.).

Setting the tone early, Missouri Baptist scored the game's first six goals with a different Spartan scoring each one. Chayleb Deves, the team leader in goals and scoring, started things off just 45 seconds in followed by goals from Kamryn Bell, Caroline Karr, Ashley Avery, Jordan Haeusser and Melina Custer.

Midland had its moments in the game scoring three goals in a seven-minute span to end the first half. The Spartans still went into halftime with a five-point lead (8-3).

Following back-to-back goals from Jordan Haeusser to open the second half, the visiting Warriors reacted with back-to-back goals of their own to make it a 10-5 ballgame. However, Midland was held without a goal for the final 17:33 of the game. It was all Missouri Baptist from there. The Spartans put the game out of reach punching in five more goals.

In the final regular-season game of her highly-decorated career, senior goalie Kaitlin Mills got the win in cage. The two-time NAIA All-American recorded 10 saves and a .666 save percentage.

Six different Spartans recorded multiple goals in the contest led by Jordan Haeusser with a game-high four goals. The junior midfielder also finished with an assist, six draw controls, five caused turnovers and five ground balls.

Equaling Haeusser's game-high five points was Kamryn Bell, who finished with her sixth hat trick of the year and two assists. Ashley Avery and Melina Custer both had productive Senior Day performances with two goals apiece. Chayleb Deves and Caroline Karr rounded out the scoring with two apiece as well.

On the day, Missouri Baptist won 15 out of 21 draw controls, out-shot the Warriors 29-22, and was 3-for-6 (.500) with its free-position opportunities.

With their two games against St. Ambrose and Morningside not being re-scheduled, the Spartans will now await their seeding and opponent for the upcoming Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship. As a guaranteed top-four seed, Missouri Baptist will host its quarterfinal matchup at Spartan Field on Saturday (April 17) at time to be determined.
