CORBY’S WALK-OFF EXTENDS WINNING STREAK TO FIVE

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Spartans won their fifth game in a row with a doubleheader sweep against William Woods on Thursday afternoon. Shelby Sievers was dominant once again in a 5-1 game one win followed by Jordan Corby's walk-off single in the 5-4 game two victory.

Missouri Baptist softball now sits tied for second place with Central Baptist College in the American Midwest Conference standings with an 8-2 record.

The Spartans jumped on William Woods starter Alexis Hassler early with four runs and the pitching staff made the lead hold up for a 4-1 victory.

Jordan Corby got things started for the offense with a walk in the top of the first inning and came home to score when Sievers doubled to deep left-center in the next at-bat. The lead doubled in the top of the second on an RBI single from Corby that brought in Katelyn Turbyfill.

Power-hitting first baseman Allison Pingel added to her 2021 home run total with a long two-run blast for the fourth run of the game and her fourth of the season.

The Owls did not go quietly. They applied pressure with baserunners in all six of Sievers' innings but she was up to the task. The junior went on to throw six innings allowing just one unearned run while collecting four strikeouts.

Senior captain Ally Dunaway slammed the door in the seventh for her first save of the campaign finishing off William Woods with a 4-1 final.

Again, the home team jumped out to a first-inning lead in game two. Corby doubled in the second at-bat, Sievers collected an RBI single in the third at-bat, and Cami Meddows drove in a run with a double to left-center field in the fifth at-bat.

Sophomore Haley Tate toed the rubber and made quick work of the Owls in the first but hit trouble in the second. Ally Mahoney took a 2-2 offering deep over the right-field wall to get her team on the board in the top of the inning.

Sievers continued her strong day in the bottom of the third inning when she ripped a 2-1 fastball for a home run into Lot C to extend the Spartan lead to three runs.

Tate rolled through the next couple of innings before surrendering a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings. She got through 5.2 innings surrendering three runs with four strikeouts before leaving the game with runners on first and second.

With Mallory Feldewerth pinch-hitting, Head Coach Ken Messer-Brooks moved Sievers out of the DP slot and into the circle. The Poplar Bluff, Missouri native induced an infield pop-up to get out of the jam with a 4-3 lead intact.

After holding the Spartan bats scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, William Woods tied the game on a pair of hits sending the game to the bottom of the seventh.

Skylar Ruiz led off the seventh with a pinch-hit single. Madalyn Bone bunted and reached safely on an Owl error to put two runners on with no outs.

Corby, with the game on the line, watched the first two pitches for balls and drilled the third into the gap in right field for the walk-off 5-4 victory.

Next up for the Spartans is a home game against Stephens College on Friday, April 16 at 2 p.m. MBU seeks to continue its five-game winning streak and will also celebrate their annual senior day.
