HATTIESBURG, Miss. – No. 7 William Carey University handed Missouri Baptist a season-ending 4-0 defeat on Thursday night in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. The Crusaders advance to face Lindsey Wilson on Saturday while the Spartans finish with a record of 10-6-1.
After a balanced, back-and-forth first 25 minutes, William Carey opened the scoring with a clinical build-up and finish right around the half hour mark. Pablo Varela Vasquez-Fraga registered the goal and the senior would continue to be a problem for the MBU defense.
Vasquez-Fraga made it 2-0 in the 36
th minute and would later complete the hat-trick in the 51
st minute. Ignacio Palacio got involved in the scoring in between with a marker just before halftime.
The Spartans registered five shots on goal compared to 10 for William Carey.
Wessel Berenschot made six saves in net for MBU.
