OTTAWA, Kan. – The Missouri Baptist University women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to seven on Thursday while recording its most impressive win to date. The Spartans went into enemy territory and picked up a 14-13 overtime victory at Ottawa University, a program receiving votes in the latest NAIA Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Top 10 Poll.
Thursday's win further solidifies the Spartans' best start in program history. They improved to 7-1 overall and still carry an unblemished KCAC record of 6-0 into Saturday's marquee matchup at No. 4-ranked Benedictine College (Kan.).
There was an ebb and flow to the contest that foreshadowed a down-to-the-wire finish. In each instance when MoBap built a three- or four-goal lead, the Braves stormed back. That particular foreshadowing came to fruition as OU rallied from three down in the waning minutes of regulation to force OT. With momentum clearly in Ottawa's favor, MBU sophomore
Kamryn Bell flipped the Braves' script and delivered the dagger and game-winner in extra time.
Another worthy candidate of a game ball, and Bell was veteran goalie
Kaitlin Mills. The two-time NAIA Second-Team All-American made several big-time stops pulling a season-high 17 saves.
The usual suspects were at the top of the leaderboard for MBU in scoring Thursday. Junior midfielder
Jordan Haeusser posted a game-high six goals from seven shots on target. The Preseason All-KCAC selection also stockpiled eight draw controls, six ground balls, and three caused turnovers.
Sophomore
Chayleb Deves, who leads the KCAC in scoring, was held one under her scoring average (5.00 goals/g) but upped her season total to 39.
Kamryn Bell joined Haeusser and Deves in the hat-trick status with her fifth three-goal outing of the spring.
Brianna Fischer accounted for the other goal, which gave the Spartans their first lead of the game at 2-1.
