COLUMBIA, MO. – The Spartans were knocked out of the AMC Softball Championship on Thursday afternoon after a pair of losses to Central Baptist and Lyon. Missouri Baptist dropped the first game against the second-seeded Mustangs with a 6-5 final and the second to the Scots with a 4-2 final.
Â
The MBU offense was held to just one run through the first five innings of the first game against CBC before coming alive in the late innings. Down 5-1 in the top of the sixth,
Jordan Corby stepped up with one out and drilled a first-pitch home run to left field to pull her team within three.
Â
After another Mustang run in the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans entered the final inning down 6-2. Â
Katelyn Turbyfill singled to begin the inning followed by a two-run home run off the bat of
Haley Tate. Another run scored later in the inning when Corby drove in another run with a single.
Â
With two runners on and the tying run on second, the CBC relief pitcher Hannah Work was up to the task. She struck out the next two batters looking to end the game and to send MBU to the consolation bracket.
Â
In the elimination game against Lyon, the Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on RBI singles from
Shelby Sievers and
Allison Pingel. However, three runs from the Scots in the bottom half of the third would be all the run support their pitching staff needed.
Â
Missouri Baptist fell with a 4-2 final to Lyon to end their tournament championship hopes and to drop their record to 15-14 for the season.
