OWENSBORO, Ky. – MBU Men's Soccer seemed to be in control and headed for a season-opening win over Brescia on Wednesday afternoon. In the blink of an eye, however, it all came crashing down. Two late markers from the Bearcats in the final five minutes led to a 2-1 defeat to start the new campaign.
The first half went according to plan as senior midfielder
Reece Kral opened the scoring in the 12
th minute. Minutes later, it was nearly 2-0 but a Spartan goal was disallowed after a foul.
The 1-0 score held until 85
th minute. Brescia's Domenico Colletta tied the game on a penalty kick after an MBU foul in the box. Just over two minutes later, Javier Morejon sliced through the Spartan backline and finished off the go-ahead goal to give the home side a 2-1 lead.
"Brescia was up for a fight today," noted Head Coach
Jake Alvernia. "Credit to them. We have to move on learn from this."
The Spartans will have a quick turnaround with Saturday's home opener less than 72 hours away. Northwestern (Iowa) will be the opponent with kickoff scheduled for noon at Spartan Field.
