SPARTANS WIN SEASON OPENER FOR FIRST TIME IN PROGRAM HISTORY

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Missouri Baptist football program took down Lyon College on Saturday with a 31-14 final score for their first season-opening win in the program's history. The Spartans rallied behind a record attendance and numerous strong performances on both sides of the ball.

With more than 1,000 people in attendance, the Spartans rode a 121-yard rushing performance from Ronald Allen and three total touchdowns from quarterback Josh Munn to a win to improve to 1-0 this season.

After punting on their first drive, the Scots cut a marching Spartan offense down after nine plays when Amarius Stinnett took an interception 85 yards to the endzone to give visitors an early 7-0 lead.

Missouri Baptist answered later in the second quarter when freshman kicker Jonah Cox got his team on the board with a 32-yard field goal with 1:12 remaining.

At the beginning of the second quarter, the Scots threatened to extend their lead deep in the MBU defensive end when a pair of pass deflections from Jaylen Cowley and Zeppelin Velder put the drive on the ropes at 4th and 10. After a timeout to think things over, quarterback Isaiah Bradford missed a pass to J.D. Horn to turn the ball over on downs.

The Spartans took the gift and made their way quickly down to the other side of the field. Ronald Allen broke off a 26-yard run, followed immediately by a diving 29-yard reception by Tyler Ball. Munn then completed a three-yard pass to Jacob Triplett and punched in a six-yard touchdown run to give the Spartans their first lead.

Lyon had a chance to respond on the proceeding drive but missed a 35-yard field goal attempt wide left. Another MBU punt gave them the ball back, but Andre Chandler quickly took it back from the opponents, picking off a Bradford pass on the 28-yard line.

Strong field position had the home team threatening, and Munn once again capitalized, this time with a nine-yard touchdown rush to give his team a 17-7 lead heading into the second half.

Defense dominated the third quarter as both teams were shut out. It would not be until 9:40 remaining in the fourth quarter when Munn found tight end Easton Locke for an 11-yard touchdown pass after being put in position by Allen's big 17-yard rush.

Lyon continued to fight hard after replacing their starting quarterback with Michael Troxler. Troxler found J.D. Horn for a touchdown from 24 yards out to make it a two-possession game.

Hoping to put the game out of reach, Allen carried the ball and the Spartan offense down the field. With the ball on the goal line, the senior from Granite City, Illinois, punched the ball in the endzone to ice the game with 1:21 remaining.

Josh Munn led the offense like a true quarterback on Saturday, posting 24 completions on 34 attempts for 223 yards and a touchdown. He also contributed with his legs adding 31 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Ronald Allen and Tyler Ball played a substantial role as well. Allen posted a career-high 121 rushing yards and his first-career touchdown while Ball reeled in six catches for 96 yards.

On defense, Zack Kern and Blake Kight led the team with five tackles. As a team, the Spartans collected four pass breakups, hurried the quarterback four times, and posted a takeaway with Andre Chandler's second-quarter snag.

The win over the Scots gives the Spartans their first win in a season-opening game in the program's history and their first win over Lyon since 2016's 70-38 blowout victory.

Next up for Jason Burianek's team is a trip up to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, on Saturday, September 4, where the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers will host them at 1 p.m.
